I am from edinburgh and I wish to revive a (slightly different form) of gardyloo. Gardyloo was a cry given just before a bucket of 'waste' was hurled from a window in edinburgh before there was a decent sewerage system. What I want to do in essence is to do the same but with buckets of water. Why ? I live on a main road close to a lot of pubs and clubs and late night drunkards make a lot of noise , sing , sometimes fight on their way home. I want to throw water over them . The Question :- Is it illegal to throw a bucket of water over someone who is disturbing the peace ?

I should imagine that it is illegal. I would also suggest that it may result in people trying to kick your door in or throw various other things back at your window.
I agree with rinky, your are more likely to have your door smashed in rather than be arrested.
Whether it's legal or not, I would have thought you would just be aggravating the situation. What do the police say? What about your neighbours' opinions? Have you contacted your MP?
Yes - it would be common assault. I believe that you could use "reasonable force" as part of citizen's arrest but chucking a bucket of water over someone would not constitue such. Furthermore it may not be possible to attempt a citizen's arrest as the offence (drunk and disorderly?) would not warrant it.
If they are stopping you resting at night, you could try contacting the Environmental Health Officer.
Chuck the water, shout "PETROL", light a match and watch 'em run!
A lesson also in what to look out for when you are buying or renting a property? (assuming you have a choice of course).
What a great revival - VIVA the Gardyloo - I 'm with you !!
Dagman - may not work unless they have lost their sense of smell !!
