I was watching the first ever Dr Who this morning on Gold and wondered what ever happened to the Doctor's grand-daughter who he was travelling with? I thought he was all alone in the universe and his planet? There must be some Dr Who expert out there who knows.

The Dr being the last of his race is only a new series thing. In the classic series there are several stories set on Gallifrey and over the 150 odd classic stories a lot of different Timelords and Timeladies have been encountered including the Master, Rani, Meddling Monk, Omega, Drax....

By the way the Dr's Granddaughter, Susan is left on Earth at the end of the tenth story The Dalek Invasion of Earth.
I suppose it is a bit like Highlander, when the plot for the first film was "There can be only one" and the ending dicated there was indeed only one.

Yet, 4 movies an an entire TV series later there seems to be more immortals than you can shake a stick at.

many thanks!!
She could've died in the Time War like all the others.
The actress who played the Doctor's grand-daughter, Carole Ann Ford, left the programme about a year after it started.
The character of Susan as described to her would have had telepathic communication with her grand-father and be rather an Avengers style character ( itself a great leap forward for female TV characters in the early 1960's ). However, by time the character reached the screen, she was a bit of a screamer, and Carole wasn't too happy. She was also in her 20's playing a teenager.
In recent years Carole has acted as a voice coach, particularly with politicians.
Carole returned to Doctor Who as Susan for the 20th anniversary scecial "The Five Doctors" with another actor playing the first Doctor ( actor William Hartnell died in 1975 ).
Here are details of the last original story Susan appeared in...
