After 20 years together my mum & 'step-dad' today decided they are going to get married, sadly they haven't had the greatest times together as he was diagnosed with MS in 1991 & confined to a wheelchair since 1996/7 but somehow even with all the mood swings/tantrums & arguments, Love (or something) has seen them through :) But on June 1st they found out the lump in his neck is throat cancer :( I went with them on June 6th to find out his prognosis...which sadly isn't good. But not going to dwell on that now :(

I am really surprised how much learning of them getting married has chuffed & excited me (I was always a daddies girl lol) but I also feel sad coz it feels like its being forced coz of the situation :( it isn't btw but it is a case of 'well we never said we wouldn't, so why not'

& then on the other hand I think...they may never have 'got round to it' otherwise.

What are your views/opinions on this situation? Do you know anyone who was in a similar situation? Or is this the longest engagment EVER...bare in mind they aint married yet LOL

hello Jo, ain't seen you around in daytime for a while... Yes, I knew a couple who'd been together for about 12 years and got married when he contracted lung cancer (a heavy smoker) a few weeks before he died. I wonder if this isn't quite common, though I don't know of any others.
Jo! Jo!! Jo!!! Here's to the wedding and you choosing the best knock out glad rags.
Don't have a view or opinion on the nuptials.....
Just party on LOL :-)

Sending Huge Amounts Of Love To You All.....

Hi Jo, that is such a lovely yet sad story, they obviously love each other very much, I know people don't have to marry to show that they love each other, but they feel it is the thing they want to do, hope they manage to have a fair time together before anything bad happens, Ray xx
Best wishes to them!

Hi uncle Ray ((((hugs))))
You've got 2 very brave people there Jo. I wish them all the luck and happiness they deserve. x
Hello little niece lia xx, sorry jo
I think its great hon, it will give them something good to focus on. x x
I know a few couples like this and I believe, apart from the obvious love, that it is necessary to keep things tidy, wills and the like. I have a friend who, after 20 odd years of living with his partner was diagnosed with cancer. He got married and luckily is now clear.
A lomg story I wont go into but my 2nd wife married her 2nd husband who was very ill at the time and not expected to recover. The marriage was basically to secure her rights as a wife, widows pension etc, after all she gave up work and looked after him for years. Personnaly I would not like to be in a long term relationship without getting married, call me old fashioned ( well not any more joke there somewhere) Best of luck to them.

Both me and my wife have children from previous marriages, it sounds callous, but one reason why we got wed was that the legal situation regarding wills was covered. Love her to bits really but dont tell her.
Having retired from the "marriage" business, I can confirm that this happens quite a lot and it warmed my heart then and now.
There are many reasons why couples simply don't think about marriage until something like this happens and I can remember many instances when my fingers were firmly crossed that we would reach the appointed day.
Without a doubt, the couples I met were just as sincere in their committment to each other, in fact, possibly more so.
Thank goodness they have this chance to do so - so many couples do not as Fate steps in too soon.
Enjoy the day Slooow Jo - there won't be a dry eye in the house but they'll all be of joy!

aww thanks all :) to expand....my mum got married at 18 but never divorced, she is 67 now but sadly her 'husband' passed away Feb 06 :( ironically from cancer :( so its also been a case of 'well I'm not free anyway' till now. I've asked now that if he is 'well' on the day can we make a big deal of it. But otherwise it'll be me, them & a neighbour as 2nd witness :( I do hope it doesn't come to that though & they have said they want to do it within a month. so fingers crossed xx

hey jno long time no see, you still on nightshift lol
