have you tried the water drain at the bottom of your inline fuel filter, if you are picking up the odd bit of water it wont atomise and burn as diesel does its like a thumbwheel on the underside of the filter caing althouigh most cars have a waring light if it detects the presence of water how long is it since you changed the fuel filter? 20k is about the usual mileage ,have you been running it on supermarket diesel this can be often lower grade fuel and can give problems has it just started doing it out of the blue?could be one of your injectors not breaking off cleanly(this is when fuel is injected into the cylinder after a while the injectors lose the crisp delivery of fuel and dribble a bit ) this is usually noticed by a drop in mpg of approx5%, do you get a rough start up? does it miss when ccold or hot have you noticed any excess smoke when for example you acceleratebriskly? we can bottom this problem but needa little more info p.s a set of injectors is not a bad job youare looking at 1 1/2 hours labour plus over haul about 80 quid so your very friendly independant can im sure do this far more cheaply than your local volvo stealership, sorry dealership!!
