copied from another site Dream of Fair to Middling Women (1932) Follows the adventures of the hapless Belacqua as he navigates romance, friends, alcohol and a demanding shiftless lifestyle. Beckett's first novel that is so Joyecean it features snippets of 5 languages and renders the story line nearly incomprehensible due to its impressionistic style and incessant wordplay. Yet it does start out with Belacqua masturbating to the thought of his girlfriend while sitting on a pier - an original beginning at least. site reference http://www.littlebluelight.com/lblphp/works.php?ikey=1
I've just been reading about Samuel Becket on the net and I'm slighltly confused. Belacqua was a man, but wasn't Belaqua a woman?

I see that she appeared in More Pricks Than Kicks (1934; Picador eds.), but don't know if that is where she first appeared.
