Leaves turning brown

Generally speaking when the leaves of a plant start to turn brown does this mean the plant is underwatered or overwatered? Thanks

It doesn't have to be either of those things...it could be cold winds, frost, roots dying, disease.
If I had to chose one of those options I'd say underwatered.
