Poor starting Focus

A mate of mine owns a 2002 Ford Focus which starts very badly. When you start it up (whether it be first thing in the morning when cold, or after you have been using it all day) it requires a long turn of the key. Sometimes it then stalls. Fords have re-programmed the ECU and he has tried fitting a new battery but it still starts very badly.

Any suggestions AB'ers?
