Thanks for your response to my query:-re-Internet. Could I ask you explain further. I downloaded the link for Belarc and I don't know what to do next. Hope you can help.WR.

I just did what ACtheTroll suggested (I had not done it before) and this is what I had to do.
Click Download on the web site and it downloaded a file called advisor.exe in the folder called "My Documents"
I went into "My Documents" and double clicked on advisor.exe and the install began.
At the end of the install it ran a check on my computer to see what hardware and software I had installed.
It then displayed a web page with all the informaiton.
It added an entry called Belarc Advisor to my Windows Start menu if I wanted to run it again.

This is about as detailed as it gets (for free!)
There are utilities that give passwords and such ... but they are very expensive. My fave is �1250.00

Vista has an option to create reset discs and backup passwords
There is the files and settings transfer wizard (see this)

and you can import/export favourites and backup my documents.
finally (and probably the safest of all) you can create an image of the entire hard disc ... which will restore everything (as it was when you took the "snapshot")
This is a good project for you to cut your teeth on.
