Has anyone tried using Super Glue on their fretboard/strings playing fingertips to save going through the "pain" of getting those hard callouses - or will I have to do it the hard, painful way?

it's worth going through it - it's temporary
It doesn't take long to toughen up the skin- stick with it!
I have used superglue on the fingers of my left (fret) hand when I used to do 3 hours sets on bass, but looking back WTF was I thinking!!!?

Just build up gradually, it's not worth the risk of finding your left hand accidentally welded a pint glass or even worse if you decide to go for a quick leak just before you start playing!!

Thanks to Whickerman, Scarlet and Dr Wu - you're a bunch of masochists; only joking - OK, I'll stick with the pain man and get through it to all those clean notes.
