It's a dialect - especially American - version of 'mum' and has been in use since the 19th century.
Strange but true... in every country in the world, and in every language, the sound of the letter 'm', combined with a vowel, is uttered by infants in relation to their mother before they are able to talk. Ma, mam, mum, mom, are all the same, differing only in dialect, as QM says.
