Well some people say that pedantry stems from the Greek paedagogos which means leader of children or educator, so Im content with that.

Whether my attempt at answering your Q was done in a pedantic manner or was feeble is a matter of opinion and yours has been notted. But I like to think that in some small way I have contributed to your quest for knowledge, albeit unassumingly.

The Roy Chubby Brown School of Amusement has an opening for next term, I have signed up. Watch this space.
Actually Octavius, Jesus is derived from the Aramaic for Joshua, a common name at the time, and also the first name of Barabbas (Barabbas, strangely, meaning 'Son of God'). Then the greek version etc.

As for the bible - it was translated from Geordie in the first century. I mean, it'd have to be, right?
Translated from the Georgie? I thought that the bible was translated from the Manchuniun?
Or was that just the New Testament?
Oh no! Cant be. The new testament was translated from the Brumie wasn't it ?
..actually it was translated from liverpudlian. The commandment often cited as 'Thou shalt not kill' should really be 'eh, caam down , caam down' when translated literally.
No, you are all deluded. Luke 7.1 verse 12-18 Jesus addressed his disciples by saying lo, me old muckers I thought I was on me Todd. Get off yer Aris, up the apple and pears and do me some Fanny and chips for me Tommy.

Therefore he was clearly a cockney.
Octavius, pardon my ignorance but I am from London and I've never heard of fanny and chips. Maybe I didn't listen closely enough in Sunday School. What is it? (Incidentally, wouldn't he have said "I fort I woz on me tod"?).
Fanny and Chips seems like a good night out to me !
How did I know some bright spark would say that?!! :o)
Fanny Craddock = cod

Well for me at least, as I don't like haddock. I'm from the East End of London but I ain't a cockney.
Thank you Octavius. I've really never heard that.
I obviously mixed in the wrong circles!

I belong to the Basil Fawlty school of interpretating Pedantry :-''Stating the Bleeding Obvious''.
It wasn't obvious to me Brionon. Maybe I'm a bit slow to catch on with rhyming slang.
Even God likes a good laugh

There were 3 good arguments that Jesus could have been Black:
1. He called everyone "brother"
2. He liked Gospel
3. He couldn't get a fair trial.

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Jewish:
1. He went into His Fathers business.
2. He lived at home until he was 33.
3. He was sure his Mother was a virgin and his mother was sure he was
God.

and 3 equally good arguments that Jesus could have been Italian:

1. He talked with his hands.
2. He had wine with every meal.
3. He used olive oil.

.and 3 equally good arguments that Jesus could have been a
Californian:

1. He never cut his hair.
2. He walked around barefoot all the time.
3. He started a new religion.

.and 3 equally good arguments that Jesus could have been Irish:
1. He never got married.
2. He was always telling stories.
3. He loved green pastures.

But the most compelling evidence of all 'proofs' is that Jesus could
have been a woman!

1. He fed a crowd at a moment's notice when there was no food.
2. He kept trying to get a message across to a bunch of men who just
didn't get it.
3. And even when he was dead, He had to get up because there was more
work to do !

well thay dont call him Gods rotweiller for nothing he'll be bringing back the little red book the dreaded catechism i can still recite both of by heart we had it drummed in to us at school every bloody day no wonder catholics have a degree in guilt every thing you did was a sin hahaha
Jesus was NOT born in Ireland, the reason being that they couldn't find three wise men or a virgin
One advantage of the use of Latin was that Catholics could attend Mass anywhere in the world and follow the service, regardless of the language normally spoken by the priest.
Generally speaking, they understood what was being said from memory, without necessarily understanding Latin. It's many, many years since I last attended a Catholic Mass but I think that there has usually been a choice in most churches of attending a High Mass in Latin or a shorter Low Mass in the language of the country, and surely this is the ideal compromise.
Not a bad idea. Followers of other faiths wishing to attend a service when travelling have to struggle unsuccessfully to follow a service conducted in the incomprehensible language of clergymen from places like Uzbeckistan, Kranska Gora or Glasgow.
Octo;
You are wasting finger muscles on giving an intelligent answer to such a stupid question.
I suppose brionon does not even know Jesus was Hebrew.
"Nurse ! Nurse ! Quick..........we need a machine that goes 'ping' to cubicle 2 immediately.........

.....................I'm afraid Mr and Mrs Snug that your child has a serious deficiency of humour, irony and wit.........together with a seriously distended sense of pomopsity.........

We can only pray that we've got to the problem in time..........."
