In the last few days, every time I've switched on/off our brass light switches, or touched anythng metal etc., I've been getting electric/static shocks. It used to happen to me a lot at work when opening the filing cabinets. What can I do to prevent this happening as it's very unnerving? I did once read that you can buy an anti-static spray, but can't remember much else about it.Thanks.

That's just your electric personality, smudge !

I've heard some people are more susceptable to static shocks than others. Also, it can vary according to atmospheric conditions, humidity etc; even down to what you are wearing, such as man-made fibres, or the degree of insulation from your footwear.

I've never heard of any spray though!

Can you think of anything that has changed in the last few days?

sorry I can't help with this, but would be interested to know the answer as this happens to me all the time when I am out shopping, if I am in department stores I have to touch the rubber part of the escalator briefly before I get on, I still can't get used to it though

brachiopod - You're probably right about my personality, lol. Today I've been wearing a navy Cotton Traders top, denim jeans, with no man-made fibres & cotton sox. I've been feeling a bit down though, so maybe the static shocks are to keep me on my toes!

Jules - I also get this when I go into department stores. It's very frustrating having to touch something 'rubbery' before touching anything metal. If I'm shopping with one of my daughters, they usually get the raw end of one of my shocks when handing me something - it's really weird! I hope we can find a cure for it J.

HI Smudge,I get this when i exit my mondeo, but only in the summer or when the weather is quite warm.I tried one of those static things you hang on the back of the car to touch the road but it didnt make any difference.also i get static from supermarket trollys!!its electricfying"as john travolti would say.

vinny - us 'statics' must stick together! There has to be an easy remedy for us lot out there somewhere!

Another one here Smudge!  I get a right smack from cars, tv's & lifts etc - the worst ones are those that go right through you & flick the back of your heels!

You could try wearing nothing but rubber wellies - er did you ever get those venetian blinds?? :-)

noddy - I don't believe it, are you psychic, or have you just been watching me & my husband come out of Roseby's curtain shop? We've literally just got back home after searching for venetian blinds to fit our windows. The 10ft bay, consisting of 1x6ft & 2x2ft, isn't a problem, but we've got to have the upstairs one made, as they don't do an 8ft for the bedroom off the peg!

Getting back to static bodies. I do have nice pair of green wellies, but they'd look hilarious without any clothes on! But then again..........!

Yes Smudge I am the 'All Seeing' one - for heaven's sake put your clothes back on..... ;-)

Hi Smudge.
We get this a lot at work and I find specific shoes that I wear make it worse. Especially loafers or flip flops. Basically anything that drags along the carpet or if you shuffle when you walk. We had someone who came and sprayed the carpet with this anti static spray and I'm sure he said it was just diluted washing up liquid. You could try and spray it lightly around the house but I can see it could be a bit of a problem when going to department stores.

Hope this helps

Thanks - happy_face, I shall venture out tomorrow in search of an anti-static spray. If I can't find one, I shall do what you suggest.

smudge,

dry air has been known to cause this. air is especially dry in the winter because of the lack of humidity. try using a humidifier to put some moisture in the air.<a target='_blank'target='_blank' href="http://www.school-for-champions.com/science/staticcont.h tm

I would be a bit wary about squirting diluted washing up liquid on carpets as this will attract dirt and make your carpets dirty, not that I have this problem at home as we have wooden floors in most of the rooms. I don't think Debenhams etc would appreciate me squirting stuff around in their shops either.

Hi all - thank you too! :0)
For the past few months I keep getting electric shocks and im not doing anything obvious that would cause them, apart from me getting them all the time I also pass on electric shocks to my partner whether im touching his hand or if i kiss him. Is this normal? It dont have to be touching anything electric like plugs it just happens. What causes it? Its starting to become really annoying :(

Thanks
Does anyone know why my daughter is getting really bad electric shocks from switching on light switches? She has blown out 2 light bulbs! Now she walks around the house with a wooden spoon in order the turn the lights on.....
