when are you meant to start buying baby presents for a pregnant woman? should you wait until after 3 months or something? i know that technically you can buy them whenever, but is there any 'bad luck' limits or anything?

I tend to wait until after the 20week scan, generally the earliest I would buy something would be at 16 weeks (after the first important scan)
i would play it safe, as some people are more superstitious than you might think, so just wait until about the 4-5 month
If the mommy was excited enough to tell you, then it's okay to go out and get a gift. It sounds like you're ready to buy out a store, so remember to pace yourself. You've got several months of preggo before you even get to meet the little bundle of joy.

If you feel you MUST exercise some restraint, wait until after they get the ultrasound that will tell the sex. Then you know whether to buy blue or pink.

And if you're asking from an ettiquette stand point, you may give anyone a gift at any time. It's typical practice to wait until the baby shower or after the baby is born to give the shower, but if you can't wait, just do it!

And congratulations to your friend on the baby.
I would wait for a good few months....i agree with cazzz i think at about 20-30 weeks when there is an almost certain chance of survival if *god forbid* anything should go wrong.

My mum refuses to buy anything up until the last moments -and i'm 29 weeks...
I'm 37 weeks and have only been buying things the last month (don't want to tempt fate). It's only now that family are asking if there's anything they can get, but since we don't know if it's a girl or boy I've told them to wait. Most of my friends buy after the baby's born. Work colleagues buy a bunch of flowers when you go on maternity leave, and presents when baby's born. Personally, I would definately never give a present before 3 months, until after the first scan.
Agree with the above, but also you may want to ask the recipient when would be best to give her the present.

I refused to have anything for the baby in the house until a month before I was due. Even then it was just the bare necessities (clothes, nappies, moses basket, car seat) the cot and pushchair were kept at my parents house until the baby had arrived.
