many tks sarumite
what about spile?
Hmmmm Spile seems better
Sarumite is right (as usual), Barterboy. The answer is STILE.
Zeb424's & GK Fanatic's suggestions of a spile refer to the hole and its matching tapered bung in the side of a barrel or cask. There are many Pubs in the UK called the Tap and Spile. Hence the old word for the ale store or bar being the Taproom.
Good luck.
