We have found that the best ones are the simple ones that you blow up when needed. They fit round the back of your neck and support both sides of your neck, so that your head doesn't flop over to one side and you get a stiff neck when asleep. They are quite cheap and easily available. Where are you going? Somewhere exciting?!?
these days a lot of them seem to blow up on the sides only and not behind your neck. This is no use to me, I need neck support; if it makes any difference to you, you should make sure you know which sort you are buying. You might also like to check out your airline; some of the long-haul ones offer 'wings' on the seat headrest that fold out to rest your head on.
My wife. Hope this helps.
I would recommend a travel pillow called the JetRest. They cost about 20 which may seem quite expensive but worth every penny in my opinion. The pillow is an unusual shape and designed so that you can lean your head into it and avoid getting neck ache that the conventional travel pillows often cause. It also rolls up conveniently with a velcro strap so it takes up less space in a bag when not in use. I bought mine over the internet but I believe you can buy them in the shops too.
