heater very noisy

my peugeot 205's heater makes a dreadful noise when i put it on, it alternates between a really obnoxious "rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" sound and a screeching whistle. its driving me crackers! anyone know whats wrong?

A well known noise to all owners of an elderly 205!!! The fan is shot- scour the scrappies for another one, but they are hard to come by in good order: new ones are available, but not cheap.

The problem stems from the fact that they actually run all the time the ignition is on, even if you think the fan is turned off, it's not- it's still turning.....so the bearings eventually wear out and the fan impeller flops about. When you get a good one, wire a seperate switch into it so you can actually turn it off if needs be- this will save it from wearing out so quickly.
