Why is a Pelican Crossing so named? It obviously has nothing to do with pelicans.

Originally PE-LI-CON, Pedestrian Light Controlled... but now known as pelican crossings.
And a Toucan Crossing is called so because two types can cross (pedestrian and cycles)...
I think this may have been the first question I ever answered on this site, way back in the mists of time. Anyway, yes, it's PEdestrian LIght CONtrolled, though it was mainly a contrived animal name to go along with zebra crossings, which were already in existence.
Because Penguin would be silly
Also, Puffin crossings are named from "Pedestrian User Friendly INtelligent" which is an even more contrived way to try and keep to the animal theme.
