Could be Karakul - it is from the Ukraine and used in carpet manufacture
Sorry, didn't see your earlier posting.
I believe that Karakul isnt the answer on this one - although thats the name of the breed of sheep ,its the name of the wool that's required.

Think along the lines of "charge of the light brigade" for the German translation
