You pay Stamp Duty Land Tax on the transfer of the land title documents, so yes, its no different from acquiring from someone else. The only cop-out is if the property is in a disadvantaged area - see below.

No. You may be liable for inheritence tax but if you inherit a property you will not have to pay stamp duty - it is not a sale.
Thanks for the stars but as Everclean has pointed out, I got it wrong this time. Sorry about that.
BUT there's still a form - SDLT60 - to lodge with the Assent. It is a declaration that no formal SDLT1 return needs to be made.
