Ex wife has booked foreign holiday and intends to take our son out of school for his last 2 weeks at Primary School. Not only will he miss vital education but also his last school concert, his swimming gala and his leaver's assembly. I'm not happy and he is a little put out although obviously looking forward to holiday. Assuming the school approve the leave is there any avenue of appeal ?

The best option with any disagreement with one's ex, as I'm sure you know, is trying to convince them of your point of view without the need to take it to another level. You could offer to pay the difference on the holidays to demonstrate you are serious.
Failing that you could try talking to your son's school and asking them to refuse the holiday leave on the grounds that you have highlighted above. Then if they do refuse the leave you have avenues as your ex would be attempting something illegal with various possible outcomes for her. It is quite possible that your ex hasn't requested an authorised leave and the school isn't aware that your son will be missing the last 2 weeks of school, it wouldn't even cross most people (I know) minds to ask, they just book and go.
the school will probably allow this time off if he has otherwise good attandence, some head's actually agree that holidays are actually educational,

i agree witht he last guys suggestion, offer to pay the difference in their costs, because this is usually a big factor in why people book hols during school time, i must admit i do it myself! Although the last 2 weeks of school they dont do much work, but, i see your point missing them will be like not saying goodbye to friends and teachers.
