it's also becoming increasingly difficult to win a competition that you haven't actually entered ... do these scammers really catch people out?

if people didnt fall for it then we wouldnt be bombarded with such scam emails.
Haven't had one of those yet. The last one I had was notification of winning a cruise (all expenses paid of course).

If only I had �500 to spare for the admin charges, I would be sunning myself on deck right now.

I.ve stopped getting those ones from Nigeria asking for help moving millions of US Dollars, now im bombarded by this tripe
i get phonecalls (got one today) saying ive won a holiday and all i have to do is confirm im aged between 18 and 60 and that household income is above �20k. It annoys them when i say Im 93 and on benefits but can they send me the tickets as i cant manage to get to the conference because of my dogy hip
