if you are issued with a cheque and do not have a bank account , how can you cash it ?
i know you could sign the back of the cheque and pay it into someone elses account. is this still allowed?

It is only allowed to pay the person named on the cheque (to prevent fraud). You could try cashing it at the bank it is drawn on. What about those places where people take their benefits cheques (They are called Cash Converters where I live).
either open up a simple bank account, get the person issueing the cheque to give you an alternative form of payment (eg cash or postal order) or take it to a cheque cashing place (yellow pages) You will be charged a commisiion the size of which depends on where yu go. IE on a 100 pound cheque you might end up paying anywhaere between 3 - 10 pounds to cash it
Also remember if you want to cash it, you'll almost certainly need an ID like a passport to prove that you're entitled.
