can someone explain how you can get type characters for chemical symbols etc - like for water H2O

how do you get the 2 o drop-down by the side of the H

(nothing on my XP character map system tool

Use the Subscript and Superscript tool buttons (assuming you mean in Word).
Not a long term fix but you can go to this page:

http://ascii.cl/htmlcodes.htm

They have most of the characters you can type, so you could copy and paste from there.
If you press Ctrl and += button together (next to backspace button) you'll get subscript. Press the two buttons again to go back to normal.

If you press Ctrl, += and shift together you'll get superscript (so you can type ions correctly), again press this combination to go back to normal.
