minus 40 degrees is where the two scales meet.
I experienced -40 on an arctic training excercise while in the army (many years ago) - it is VERY cold. You can feel the water in your eyes trying to freeze - and ice stops being slippery.
-40 x 9 / 5 + 32 = -40

-40 - 32 / 9 x 5 = -40

tada!
