What is an LED and how is it different from a torch globe?

An LED uses a much smaller current, and thus can be powered by a smaller power source, for a longer period of time. It also has a much more accurate beam angle. A normal filament bulb will spray light out in all directions, whereas an LED will be much more focussed. Another point is that LEDs do not get nearly as hot as filament bulbs, meaning they are much more efficient. A filament bulb loses a lot of energy as heat.
