Basically the same as it does today. Simply a literary device to sum up a previoulsy stated set of circumstances or axiom and apply it to the overall sense of the thought being conveyed... "... today is the first day of 2007, therefore, last year was 2006..."
'and as a consequence of that ...'
Bible - what Christians might call "Old Testament" - is in Hebrew. No biblical meaning of English words!

"Therefore" means "for it" or "for that reason".
Like "therefrom"/"thereto"/"thereupon" mean from/to/upon it.

Latin is "ergo". Descartes philosophically said, "Cogito ergo sum" = "I think, therefore I am." But what a lot of people don't think- yet they are!
