calling spanish people by phone!

when calling spain is it there custom upon answering the phone to greet the person by saying yes (si) or hello (hola)? daft question i know..thanks!

They say "D�game" ("Tell me").
My Spanish frieds all answer with "Si". At first I thought it a bit intimidating, but then I realised it's just what they do. As to how you start a conversation if you are making the call, I have no idea. Adios!

I'm sure the recipient of your call will adjust to the cultural differences - why not try "Buenos dias / nochas" if it's someone you don't know, but if it's a friend, I'm sure "Hola" will be acceptable - it's the greeting I use to anyone I know even vaguely in Spain, and they seem to appreciate an English person having a go at Spanish, however limited it may be.

how hard or easy is it to learn spanish by the way? any good tapes i could buy guys? thanks
