What car is reliable and economic to run?

My current car (1993 Rover 214 SLI) is breaking the bank constantly. It was okay when I bought it in 2003, nothing went wrong for the first 2 and half years. Then 6 months ago the head gasket went, then the clutch, then the exhaust, the drumbreaks, front disc pads, 2 new tires, waterpump, battery, new cambelt and lots of other things. It made me think that its about time I found out if there's any cars that are reliable and economic to run?
