i wonder if you feel the same as me on this subject??

i unfortunatley got to watch ben elton on the charlotte church show and it reminded me that he and his counterparts were to blame for the fall of british comedy!!

i think they called it "alternative comedy"................... but i remember the greats of the time started to appear less on tv and the new wave anti thatcher brigade took over??

or am i just a dinasaur that prefers the past???

Dinosaur.

Just yanking your chain. I'm a fan of alternative comedy. I can't stand slapstick or any of the Tommy Cooper, Benny Hill, Carry On type stuff... It makes me cringe.

But that said, we all like and laugh at differet things. And I don't think anyone is a dinosaur or anything in particular just cause one genre doesn't tickle you as much as anotehr. We like what we like.
There are amoeba on Saturn who can boil a better egg than you. Your filets mignons in sauce bearnaise look like dog turds in glue.

i also hate the slapstick thing like frank spencer and so on but tommy cooper was VERY funny with just being him?

See I find Tommy Cooper very dated and honestly find thay humour excruciating. But like I said, different strokes for different folks.

Whiffey - Any chance of coming to yours for dinner some day... I like the sound of your fillets.

hi rb, i used to love all the alternative stuff and ben elton was one of my favourites. Im with China Doll on this one! although Tommy Cooper was ok he was never one of my faves and as for Benny Hill, i would rather have my teeth pulled out with rusty pliers than sit through one of his shows! However, you cant beat Morcombe and Wise, even now!
There's a programme on Channel 4, 9pm tonight about Benny Hill a how he fell out of favour with the British public. Apperently it will feature Ben Elton denying it will anything to do with him; and the reactions of todays trendy young things to Benny Hill.

I think the alternative comedy of the eighties especially Ben Elton and Harry Enfields 'loadsamoney'just seems dated and irrelevant now whereas Tommy Cooper and Morecombe and Wise have stood the test of time well.

Les Dawson did it for me! Especially the Cissie and Ada sketch's. Alternive comedy stinks.
"Alternative". Yeh and Blackadder.
I used to like Ben Elton when he did his own show's but he spoilt it by doing the political stuff. He's still a good playwright though.

Blackadder : Have you ever been to Wales Baldrick?
Baldrick : No, but I've often thought I'd like to.
Blackadder : Well don't, it's a ghastly place. Huge gangs of tough sinewy men roam the valleys terrorising people with their close-harmony singing. You need half a pint of phlegm in your throat just to pronounce the placenames. Never ask for directions in Wales Baldrick, you'll be washing spit out of your hair for a fortnight.

Hi ruge, I know what you mean with "alternative comedy" what does that mean ? Comedy is Comedy something is either funny or not, Tommy Cooper to me was a genius as was spike milligan, Kenny Everett could also be very funny, I also love shows like Fawlty towers, The two Ronnies, Fools & Horses etc, but acts Like Cannon & Ball I find pathetic, some of the funniest people I have seen live are, Tommy Cooper, Ken Dodd, Jimmy Tarbuck who was hilarious, Jim Davidson was just crude and completely unfunny, some of the new stuff like Little Britain I like, Ben elton I think has now found the right niche in writing at which he is excellent, in my opinion, Ray
Unfortunately, ben Eltons style of 'Stand up comedy' is nothing short of Anarchy, and should be banned, but as a writer of stuff like 'Black Adder and the Thin Blue Line', genius.
