Hi there,

my husband's grandparents usually buy a movie for my children between all 5 of them as their christmas gift. THis year, i have suggested that a Fred Astaire picture would be great. My girls all dance and my son is very musical and likes to watch all sorts of musical/dance interpretation and I thought this would make a nice change from the reguar disney rubbish.

However, although I have seen many, what is considered to be the greatest Astaire movie ever? I would prefer for it to be one with Ginger Rogers in also.

many thanks
mimi

Good call! I'd say Top Hat or Flying Down to Rio, both with Ginger.

Can't sing. Can't act. Balding. Can dance a little...

thanks doctor! You sound like my perfect partner as I'm the same (cept for the balding part!)

I'll take a look on amazon and see if they stock them.

What do you think about "Shall we dance?"?

many thanks

Go for The Towering Inferno. Not a lot of dancing I grant you, but he was still very good for all that!!!
My favourite Gene Kelly .. Singing in the Rain. When he dances in that gutter I could run outside and do it myself.lol
mimififi,

The quote about "cant act" etc was atually about Fred Astaire.

He had been famous on stage (with his sister) but when he did a movie test the studio said:

Cant act, cant sing, can dance a little

thanks for all your help guys, much appreciated!

(vhelpfulguy, i did know that quote, I was just being naughty and rude, pretending the doc was talking about himself.....it wasn't very funny, I grant you!!!!!! :-)
Actually, if it's for your children you may wish to consider Astaire's last ever movie Finian's Rainbow, which is a 100% family film and co-stars Petula Clark and Tommy Steele
Best Fred film is Top Hat... no quibbling there.

What about ... and bare with me here... The Blues Brothers?
It has great songs, great dance routines (especially Ray Charles' Shake your tailfeathers) and is funny, as well as having adultish humour they can grew in to.

Oh yeah, also Thoroughly Modern Millie. Great British cast (even though it's american ha ha) great songs and great story... also for kids, as most Julie Andrews films are.
