Hello, I have bought a rose, Alister Stella Gray, which i would like to grow up a fence. Can you let me know if i need to provide some extra support for it to hold on to, like some trellis, or will it scramble up there unaided? Thanks

It will probably go up unaided but it is always best to give it some support so that you can direct it to where you want it to go. Also worth taking some of the weight off the fence otherwise you could damage it.

Some wire connected to the posts usually does the job.
Hi thecatsnose,
Yes, I'd agree that some extra support would be useful, as roses are not true climbers and 'scrmble is exactly what they do and can be easily blown around in high winds. trellis is ideal for tieing it to. Good Luck Tbird+
One of the things to truly appreciate about Mr. Gray's Noisette, Alister Stella (ca. 1895) is she doesn't have much in the way of thorns. Very easy to work with. Seen here, by the way: http://susanserraphotography.smugmug.com/galle ry/1852853/4/108394412
Ours is trained on a 7 foot high trellis. Using common plastic covered garden wire, I trained the rose in just two seasons. One has to prune judicioulsy but rather severely to select the best canes for bending in the direction you desire. Lots of sun is required, try for at least 8 hours a day and lots of water in summer. Mulch to prevent the ground from drying and fertilize early, mid and late season with 10-15-10 along with about 1/2 cup each epsom salts and bone meal. Your selected rose is, thankfully, fairly resistant to Black Spot, but keep an eye out if the weather turns extra humid and treat as required. You'll enjoy this beautiful addition to any garden...
