The Channel 4 signal in our area is pretty weak, with poor sound and picture reception. However, if I select the VCR channel on the TV, take the VCR off standby and run C4 through that, the picture and sound are much better. Why - surely it's the same strength signal?

not realy, videos have a signal amplifier in them to boost the signal for better recordings.
That's right, the Video has a built in booster to enhance...you could always get a digi box !!
If you can`t even get channel 4 you stand no chance of success with a digibox which needs a high-gain aerial even in an area of good reception.

I'm not too well up on the technical terms, but if "digibox" means Freeview then we can't get that either. It's something to do with not interfering with French TV (as if they'd be bothered about ours!).
