Hi. I am going to Australia to backpack from Melbourne to Brisbane. However, I am considering a detour to Alice Springs (skipping Canberra) and then movng onto Ayres Rock. If anyone has been to Ayres Rock would you recommend it?

Thanks in Advance

It's called Uluru. You'll get a frosty reception from some of the locals if you call it Ayers Rock and the rest will politely correct you.

But yes - highly recommended, certainly way above Canberra.
Seeing the sun set over Uluru (and rise next morning) is one of the nicest things I've ever seen. It just seems to be such a magical place. Mind you, the aborigines don't appreciate you climbing it as it's sacred to them but there are loads of tourists who ignore this which is a pity and lack of respect in my eyes. I'd say well worth it and if you go to the Outback Pioneer Lodge, you're in for a good evening.
