We went to Amsterdam for a weekend about 3 months ago. Apart from all the other attractions, the red light district is just another. It's not at all like you would think. Wife and I walked up and down the streets giggling all the time - and I'm 50 !!!! (Memeories probably lol). ALL age groups (it looked like MOSTLY tourists) are just there to see what it's all about - no pervies at all.
As in any busy city, stick with the crowds and you will be fine.
It's great. A real eye opener. It's not seedy and it would probably be packed
was there in August.
Just another part of the city. It's nothing like the areas you'd associate with red-lights in UK.
Actually quite a nice place.
Couple of decent bars there.
Good window shopping.
Just, when the guys ask you if you're name's Charlie, ignore them and carry on walking.
There are hundreds of tourists there, so you will not be the only ones there. It is not how you would expect a red light district, and it is well lit.

By the time that you have walked up and down the road, and had a look at the windows, you have pretty much done it, and then you leave and go somewhere else.

There is a sex museum there as well, which is worth a wonder round, as it is pretty famous. Can't remember much about it!
yeah, had a wander around the sex museum. It's about 10-15mins walk away from red-light. Between Dam Square and Centraal Station
It's also very well policed, they are there to look after the girls and stop trouble, so go and enjoy, you will be with loads of other couples who all go for a look !
Everyone goes to have at least a peek. It's all good fun and nobody takes it seriously - not even the punters!
Some of the red light district runs either side of some canals so it is quite an attractive area.

As others have said, it is a tourist area like covent garden or trafalger square.
