It was Al Martino - Here in my Heart in 1952 when it was only the top 10

It was a top 12, actually (though because of their strange way of dealing with tied positions, there were actually 15 in it the first week!). This is of course assuming you're talking about the UK.

Except that the U.S. had charts since 1940!

I believe the first number 1 was I'll never smile again by Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra (vocal by a chap called Frank Sinatra, with backing vocals by the Sentimentalists)
