I remember reading somewhere that Norman Rockwell was an illustrator. He seemed á fairly good artist to me.

Personally, I think it does matter, because written and verbal communcation are things that are very important to me.
I don't believe I have been peevish - I have reacted to some refusal to accept a simple point of fact, coupled with sneering superiority, but that's my standard response when I receive either.
I am sure the thread is winding down, but hopefully sandy has an answer -
They are different - an illustrator is always an artist, an artist is not always an illustrator.
The monk is illustrating - as evidenced by the size of his illustrations compared to the space given to the text - it's clear which takes priority

There's a lot of variation from page to page (and there are thousands of pages I could have chosen), but most scholars will tell you that such manuscripts are unique in the way text and pictures create a unified ensemble. You really can't distinguish between art and illustration back then.
