They're about the length of my little finger nail and about a quarter of the width - black/brown ridged body with loads of legs!!

I found about 6 of them in my house last night!!!

Any help appreciated

Is it a centipede? The photo isn't very clear. Here is a variety:

The picture you've given is slightly out of focus so it's hard to tell. The ridges in your description make me wonder if they are woodlice:-

Hi petes, It looks like a woodlouse to me. They tend to come into the house when the weather gets chilly through cracks in floorboards etc. Dont worry they are harmless and dont live long. Just hoover around skirting boards and dark corners. cheers skylight
You really need to post a clearer pictuer for a definative answer. Cy Marven

Petes_dragon - simple test for woodlice - if you touch the wee critter gently, does it roll up into a ball ? If so, you've got woodlice ! Harmless btw but just a bit offputting indoors. They are a gardener's friend as they live on dead and rotting vegetation, thus speeding up decomposition. They like to live in moist surroundings, so if you want to discourage them coming into your house, ensure it is dry - you could always sprinkle talcum powder around where they are getting in !
If they are woodlice, I think they are quite harmless, just scoop them up ( they usually turn themselves upside down) and put them outside, right side up. Bless.
