Come on surely everyone knows what the first satellite was! Surely it's obvious that the first man made item in orbit be orbiting Earth long before we are capable of orbiting Mars. Aint rocket is it? (ooops)

Only if someone knows it was the first manmade satellite. As NMA said, anyone under the age of 50 with no real interest in astronomy or space related tech may well not know.

Incidently did you know that Telstar1 was the very first satellite communication between two computers in 1962? ICBM 1401s. They measured approx 6ft x 6ft x 3ft.
