Is It Because I'm Old?

When I was young my parents and grandparents were forever complaining about the cost of everything.   'How much?  I remember when it was half a crown' sort of scenario.

Now things seem expensive to me.  I've just been looking to replace my eReader and was thinking how expensive they are.  To put the cost in to perspective I have to compare prices to the current price of a carton of cigarettes (I used to smoke 40 a day) - they are not so expensive after all.  Thank evans I stopped smoking.

Do other ABers have this problem?  It's not as if I've been asleep since the 70s, I do most of the shopping and pay the bills so I'm aware of how much things cost.  I know my income is a lot higher than back in the day but £100 is still £100, even though it isn't.

This hasn't crept up on me, it happened quite suddenly.

For example I bought my first eReader in 2008, a thing beauty made by Sony.  I paid a lot more for that than I will for my new one but didn't blink at the cast. It was nearly £200 15 years ago.

The increase cost of most items would be more bearable if there was a decent standard of quality within that item. From food to household items the quality for sure has gone down, so in fact the cost could work out even higher.

well, your wife wouldn't have worried about the cost of smoking anyway - she wouldn't have been allowed to have her own bank account; if you were in a restaurant, she'd have been given a lady's menu without the prices (because she wouldn't have been paying). Yet at the same time she'd have been expected to manage the housekeeping.

It was a funny old world back in the day.

That was how society was but my wife has always been in charge of this household 😊.  Good thing, too.

When money is tight everything seems expensive,   it's basically how much is the thing you want as a percentage of your income times the *** it I want it constant, over the extra outgoings this month,  ..... So I am getting a new coffee maker, but I might not get the new microwave ( the current one works but looks a bit tatty) and I still might get a subscription to birdguides....but maybe not the dress I saw this afternoon..... But it was really nice, and there are no Extra bills till march....

My husband never came out with many helpful tips, but the one he did come out with once has always remained with me and it's this.

If we can afford it and it's what you want, then get it.

So Barry, if you want to replace your eReader and you have the money to buy it, then buy it

Another thing to remember is this, you can't take it with you, so enjoy it while you can.

Great advice, Barsel.

Actually you can take it with you, I've seen folk on planes use them.
