I know I've gone on about this before but... it's always worth mentioning (and considering) whether clues are across or down: it's extra information.

Your 2 for example MUST be a down clue (for the 'up' to work).

No K - AUTOMATES is correct but you need the wordplay on "carpals"!

Quizmonkey Good point - well made and well taken. I have noticed the reference to across/down clues in the past and it never really struck home until now. It proves the point that you have to make the mistakes yourself before the lesson is learned! Thanks for that.

The hunt for the genus was quite entertaining - once the error was discovered it was easy!
By coincidence crofter today's Guardian puzzle is by the same setter!
