I leave the one in my bedroom on all the time as it is really quiet, but the other 2 I have in other rooms, I turn off at night.

Don't know if they use much electricity, but I'd be interested to know myself.

I was just reading about a woman that dries her clothes in 2 hours with a dehumidifier. I think she said it cost 9p an hour to run.  I suppose it depends on the make and model.

If that's the case, I'll be using mine a lot less Rocky.

It's important that the water you remove from the air in your home is then taken out of your home, otherwise it just stays inside and is recycled. It can be taken outside via a hose or by being collected by the gadget and then taken out to be poured away.

I want to use one mainly to dry washing

I'm surprised that anybody uses electrical equipment without a good idea of running costs. Look at the rating-plate on the device...see how many watts it uses and calculate running costs using your provider's "cost per kilowatt".

Or, see your smart meter - if you have one!

Gingerbee, I phoned E-ON yesterday as my electric bill is twice what it usually is.

It didn't occur to me that it could be the humidifiers.

In future, they will be on a lot less.

An awful lot less than a tumble dryer.

^ and a whole lot more hassle..

I disagree, and we have both.

I've never used my dehumidifier for drying clothes, I bought them after noticing some damp patches on the walls and they do collect quite a bit of water and have to be emptied quite regularly.

...And I disagree, too. A tumble drier is designed to dry clothes. A dehumidifier is designed to dry air.

I agree with gingjbee. The dehumidifier doesn't dry clothes. You put your wet clothes on a rack OR on the radiators, etc. The dehumidifier collects the moisture in the air. It doesn't dry the clothes as fast as a tumble dryer. It might be cheaper, but there will be wet washing everywhere.

Gingejbee, my comment was to the suggestion a dehumidifier is more hassle. It isn't. I speak from experience.

The only 'hassle find with them is emptying the containers, but I wouldn't really call that a hassle.

Unless your home is vacuum sealed, you're wasting your time with a dehumidifier.

I have nowhere to put a tumble  so decided to treat myself to the dehumidifier, put it in my spare room with windows and doors shut and it dried the clothes in an afternoon so very pleased with it.
