I have just received a message purporting to be from DVLA asking me to verify my driving licence.

I have deleted it.

Well done, and thanks for the warning.

Well done Tilly.  Scammers can use a driving licence to make a fake identity in your name, as the long code reveals surname, date of birth, and gender

Yes, I received one last month.  Scammers are pests.

Can never be too careful

FLOKO, the photo driving licence shows all that information in plain sight without the need to see the Driver Number.

TCL the scammer cannot see your photo card so he has no idea till you tell him the code

i get scam mail all the time, it's rather pathetic actually, but im aware and deal with it, just block them either email or calls.

FLOKO, would they not ask for a copy of the licence rather than just the number?

The Driver Number includes only the first letters of the surname (or 9s if fewer than five letters) and not the first names.

I now get around 15 scam mails a day - and that is after my spam filter (on my personal web server) has dealt with some.

Real pest, but what can you do apart from the very sensible thing you have done Tilly.

I should have reported it but I just wanted to get rid of it quickly.

TCL. I haven't had a scam email from them, so don't know what they are asking for.

With just the code, all they need to do is visit a well known site where it's possible to find exact d.o.b.and forename, but I will leap schtum on that .

To check your driving license details on the DVLA website you need not only your DL number but also your National Insurance Number and postcode.

Floko, if you know of a site that gives out details using just your license number you really should report it to the DVLA and the police.

Barry, you are correct in that the scammers would also need the NI number. It is possible , using two public legitimate sites, to ascertain address and more ....

The police are aware.

But I believe the scammers (once you have taken the initial bait) then ask for bank details as they say you are due a tax refund .

Even if an email appears legit, I NEVER click on a link or reply.  Always contact the company direct if in doubt and do, as Tilly did,....BLOCK and delete

Oooh good, hope they phone me, new people to play with....

Shall I do satanic help line, or impotence advisory service?

Oh sorry  not a phone one, less fun but still scope for sending rubbish back ( haven't got a driving license)

I had another one today. How do I report it?

Tilly, phone the DVLA at Swansea and report it to them.

They need to know if there are scammers pretending to be them.

Mrs Clarion got one of these on Friday but she doesn't have a driving licence.

Thank you, Chris. All sorted now.
