Following his recent passing, much was made of the 'genius' of Mike Yarwood, and his record-breaking viewing figures.

I suspect this tribute will show that his shows have not aged well at all.

Personally, I never understood the appeal at the time - even though I was a lot younger and more easily impressed then.

i thought his impressions were franky not that impressive at all, and I always cringed at the final part when he would announce "And this is me!" as though the scales would fall from our eyes and we would suddenly realise that all those pieces with him gurning in bad costumes and make-up were not actually the real figures, but MY in disguise!

And to add to our bafflement at his range of talents, he would then sing a song really really badly, and the show would end.

As I say, his appeal was a mystery to me then, and I wonder if any other viewers of that time were similarly disimpressed?

Handcockcockup?

Andy, Retro might be referring to my question for you @14.03.

Was never a fan, though at the time he had little or no competition .

Caught most of it. Yes, it was interesting.

I had forgotten just how talented he was. I hope they do some repeats of his shows. He was of his time. A very sad man though with his alcohol problem. I thoroughly enjoyed the programme as I remember all the people he impersonated. Very clever.

I'm still trying to figure out what special talent Matt Hancock has.

Even the OP doesn't seem to know naomi.😂

He was a breath of fresh air after the music hall stars who transferred their skills to our sad wee TVs back in the day.

I watched the tribute this afternoon and enjoyed seeing his impressions again. There were many more characters than I remembered him impersonating including Tommy Cooper, Ken Dodd, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Patrick Moore, Robin Day, Michael Parkinson, Steptoe and son, MP's, Prince Charles, David Frost,  Bob Monkhouse,Frankie Vaughan ..... I am old enough to have seen those characters in person.

R.I.P. Mike

The new impressionists don't make me laugh as loud. They can be quite brutal
