I always found the joy of a slow cooker was you got the same result no matter how much effort you put into itI love cooking and have done it professionaly and I love showing off at dinner parties but I am also a lazy cook if it is just us so the slow cooker is perfect

Brown first...if you want it to taste good. You can chuck everything in raw, but results aren't as good.

...oh, and don't use as much stock as you would use doing in the oven.

I bung it all in - tastes no different and less washing up

I like to brown it then swirl out the pan with the stock to get any flavour.  But its an individual thing I would have thought.

Dont you have a dishwasher RH?

i have one of those you can take the dish out of and use on gas, so i brown mine, and have no extr washing up

thanks for your replies .I always brown it when i use the oven but i've googled a few slow cooker recipes and they didn't bother just rolled it in plain flour, so may give it a go x

yes but I don't see the point in dirtying things up for the sake of it - there is no difference in browned or not

I've done it both ways over the years and we really don't notice a difference

Redhelen do you roll the beef  in flour ?x

no not always depends on what I am cooking tbh - I quite like thickening with arroroot

Question Author

thankyou ,i've never used arrowroot x

I usually roll the meat in flour and turn over in frying pan for a few minutes, add the veg and salt, pepper, etc.  Cook for about ten minutes then add all to the pre-heated slow cooker.   A little more work but it turns out delish.
