Yeah, we all know the Mark Twain quote before it gets quoted.

So...why are humans the only species to suffer embarrassment?

I don't think that's true. Plenty of vids showing pets looking sheepish and walking away after doing something foolish. Just because they have no red cheeks on view doesn't mean they don't ever know when they've looked daft.

Good point.

But do they blush?

My beloved late dog, Alfie, used to get embarrassed if he's had an accident on the kitchen floor or carried out a bin raid.

Self awareness, even the most advanced animals tend not to show a sense of self identity.  Recorded in some fish, bonobos, chimpanzees, and a few others but it's rare.  Without a knowledge of who and what we are as an individual we can't respond to something as self diminishing.... Or dumbass.

They're the only species to deliberately do stupid things.

I sometimes wake up in the night in a sweat haunted by the memory of an act of great stupidity that happened long ago.  I have many such memories but I can remember very few that I have witnessed other people doing.

Dogs can show real emotion and the when they look embarrassed and sheepish it is amazing.

but do dogs get embarrassed or just confused by what happened and then what to do next and is it us putting our emotions and thoughts onto the dog
