Now I can get lost getting to the end of the road, and I can make a straight forward journey complicated!! But this afternoon I need to get from East Croydon station to Kings Lynn station. What is the EASIEST , or most direct way of doing it? Any help much appreciated.

Sorry, yes by train.
Did you see the link I put on for you Smow ? @9.25am.
I would go by train or underground to King Cross. At Kings Cross there is a regular 1hr 50mins journey to Kings Lynn, either non stop or one change.
east croydon to st pancras by Thameslink (train going to Bedford, Peterborough or Cambridge). from the Thameslink platforms at St Pancras, access the concourse and turn left, leave the station and cross the road to King's Cross. as stated by William, direct train kings cross to kings lynn at xx-42 past each hour.
