I own a 2009 Jaguar x type that has 90,000 miles. I’ve owned it since 2019 and I paid £4,000 for it. On auto trader the X types this age with the same mileage are going for around £3500. I’ve been looking at Mercedes’ E class and bmw 5 series the same age as my Jag with roughly the same mileage, but they’re going for around £5000/£6000. Why are they such a big difference in price even though all three are luxury cars the same age and same miles?

Well according to Parkers the X-type is 4672x2003 whereas the BMW 3 is 4709x2068.

The 3 series is comparable with the jag XE that the wife has too.

Young maf- well when I looked my bonnet was exactly flush to where the 3 series bonnet was but my boot stuck out further by a noticeable amount

And I was parked next to a E class the other week and they were pretty much exactly the same length in real life
Well argue it with Parkers, not me!

What is driving a E class or 5 series like in comparison to driving an X type?
Not driven a x-type but using 2018 cars I have driven all three. Each has its own merits and driving style, for instance my BMW has deep bucket seats is much closer to the smaller windscreen and gives a much sportier feel despite both having similar performance figures. The Jag gives a much more refined drive and is much easier to get in and out of. Clearly the BMW is aimed at the younger market. I am not a fan of the Merc, it doesnt seem to achieve either sporty or refined, seems to be trying to be both.

The only way to find outis test drive them and see which one suits you, after all that is all that matters!

Youngmafbog- is that a 5 series or 3?
You could do a lot worse than the Jag XF, loads about all price ranges. Get an automatic though.
Question Author
Tora- is the 5 series bmw a nice car to drive?
sadly never driven one, I had a 7 series though!
Question Author
Tora- what was the seven like to drive?
great car to drive, very smooth, I had an E65 V12 6L!

I’m terms of test driving these cars in garages, I want to do that but I’m not quite ready for buying one atm, it’s still ok to test drive them though? I mean obviously I won’t tell the salesman I don’t intend on buying but I guess I could just tell them that I’m testing out different cars to see what I like?
Question Author
I took an E class out for a test drive today, got it up to 60mph on the lancs. It was a 2.1L with 201bhp automatic. It was a very nice car to drive but it didn’t give me that pull you back in your seat feeling when accelerating to get up to speed.
