Good morning, I would appreciate some help with the following, thank you!

(Five pairs of answers clash in a single cell, in ways that cannot be uniquely resolved. Letters from across answers, read left to right, spell one name, those from down answers another. The names will guide solvers to replace each clash with the same thematic symbol, and they must then highlight what they are being DIRECTed to see. Chambers Dictionary ( 2016 ) is recommended. )

1a Small carnivore about to corner goose ( 5) : RA?S? ( RAISE )
12a Backsliding trustee took off, making exit (6 ) : SE?A?? ( SENATE )
16a Silky stuff’s attraction, mostly universal ( 4 ) : T??E
19a Swimmer rules swim, active round both sides of lake ( 11 ) : ???S???????
33a Hired killer’s statement of capability keeping me revolted? ( 6, 2 words ): I?????
9d Parisian is present seeing off latest European Queen ( 6 ) : ??T???

18 The observation post could be for watching birds, wildlife....
6d African hut (5 letters) = a 4 letter word for a group + the letter usually associated as the first
The last letter of 6d "clashes" with the first letter of 18a
Question Author
Thanks again! I hesitated between TANK and YANK as I could not parse.
The final straw in 24a, thanks!
24 End tram strike, definitely (3 ) T?P
Thanks, Matakari. Go wild with the last one - browse words in Chambers, it'll take mete minutes!
Question Author
Thanks, NACW, the BRB tells me that TIP can go with "end" and "strike".
Great, Matakaari. I was stunned that you had most of the letters in such a short answer,needed only a vowel... and still asked for help!
Question Author
Thanks for all the hints which help me to better understand the technique of the EV setters. I see the clashing letters and want to be certain that I have them in order. For example the first clash 10a/2d:
EDIT/AMEN, D and M clash. So, letters from ACROSS from left to right should be: D….
And from DOWN should be: M…
Is this the right way to go?
Yes - but take them column by column left to right

2ndcolumn, 4th column, 6th column, 8th column 10th column

You get what first appears to be 2 non words, but if you google them together they are in fact words and point somewhere
Matakari, glad you feel your're making a bit of progress in understanding these EV puzzles (and setters). I thought this was a lovely puzzle, with a nice, neat endgame.
Question Author
Thank you, JJ109, now let me see if I’ve got this challenge right.
For the cashing letters, I have the following:
10a/2d, 11a/8d, 16a/3d, 18a/6d, 29a/30d
DEUHB MKEAR
Matakari, you have the correct letters, not in the right order - I'd recheck the instructions given!
Question Author
Now I’m confused… JJ109 reminded me to take column by column, which I thought I did, but I seem to be completely off…the brain is overheating, perhaps…what’s the right order? Thank you!
ACROSS DOWN CROSSERS
10A = EDIT 2D = AMEN D/M
11A= CARES 8D = SKEP E/K
16A = PULU 3D = STATES U/E
18A = HIDE 6D = BANDA H/A
29A = OBA 30 = RIGA B/R
Matakari, I'm out, without my grid - but I remember that if you read across the way, from left to right, the first word spells out DU...
The other starts ME...

PS If you still don't see it, just use an anagram solver to untangle each set of five letters.
Matakari, column by column, left to right, results in DU...
JJ even said that it was column 2, then 4, then 6....
Question Author
I’ve got the two names. Many thanks again, NACW and JJ109, for your stellar explanations that have pointed me in the right direction. Once more, this was a useful learning experience. I’ll be looking forward to this week’s Spectator and the monthly Genius for some worthwhile challenges.
Thanks, Matakari, I bet you wish you'd been able to follow JJ's instructions hours and hours ago? As you said, maybe your brain was overheating! Finishing off the last stage of the puzzle wasn't too tricky, I'm sure you've seen that.

Question Author
JJ's instructions were quite clear, but I just got mixed up with the columns. And the end game jumped at me, finally!
Thanks, Matakari, yes, you certainly were 'mixed up' for a while - but at least you got there in the end!
