My cat hasn't been upstairs for 4 days now. All I remember is, he ran downstairs 100mph (he was on his own upstairs) and shot behind my chair in the sitting room. He was sleeping up there and I wonder if he had a bad dream? He's been all nervous and hasn't gone upstairs since then. He's also staying outside the back garden more often now.

Cats are quite sensitive, and if anything disrupts what they are used to it can be upsetting for them. So yes, maybe a dream...or an unusual noise, an insect...anything. My boy sleeps regularly in certain spots...my bed, the guest bedroom, sofa and big chair. After the last time my daughter and her partner visited over a month ago, he's not gone into the guest room...and it was several weeks before he slept on the sofa.
Cats will often sleep in the same spot for weeks...and suddenly have a different favourite place...that's them being cats.
Your cat will go back to his normal when he's ready.
Well the weather is better outside now. You don't mention age, but maybe he's decided that you need to install a Stannah stair lift for him.
Do you have a window cleaner? If cat was sleeping on bed and suddenly heard/seen a big squeegee at window, it would likely freak him out! It happened to my cat a couple of times :-)

Thank you, pastafreak xx

He's 13 years old now and no, there was no window cleaner. It was just quiet upstairs when he was sleeping. He also suffers with gastric reflux.
He was probably in a deep sleep and heard something, and woke up with a start. Like Pasta said, he'll probably eventually go back up there. They like different sleeping places. I put a big suitcase with old pillow in, for my 14 year old cat to sleep in, which I put in our conservatory. He loves it!
Could you not carry him up the stair and stay with him for a bit to reassure him it's safe?

That sounds lovely Patsy33 (the suitcase).
Cats like to confuse us. Just when you think you know what they like, they change.

Lol...Hopkirk. So true.
We were going to throw it out, Treacle. Then I thought, I'd know who'd like that! So until he gets fed up with it, which he will, then we will take it up the tip :-))

Love it, Patsy33 xx
