A landlord has a two bed house rented out through the council. Universal Credit pay s most of their rent. He also owns the house next door rented privately. Could he charge his “council”: tenants the same rent as the “private” tenants or does he have to charge them less? .

He can basically charge what he wants ( market rent for that area) BUT if they are sitting tenants then he has to follow the rules on rent increases

so if he has granted a years tenancy at £500 - he has to wait until the years end - and then send the rent increase in the prescribed form.

There WAS a system where the council paid the rent and cd put in who they wanted - but this is not what you are asking I think

No it is paid by Universal Credit and the tenant pays a portion. Just wondered if council tenants have the right to pay less than private tenants.
no- not in the private sector
say the rent is £500 - and they only get £450 then it is up to the parties whether it is waived and or ignored OR the landlord enforces the final fifty knicker

the tenants may say all sorts of things.
